Gear comes and goes. You replace it, sell it on the Auction House, salvage it. Drift Infusions stay on your hero for good, and the only way to get one is to go into the Drift and take it.
Drift Shards
In the lore, a Drift Shard is a splinter of the Veil that broke off when the zone's anchor slipped. In the game, it is a crafting material that drops from Drift elites, named rares and Drift bosses. Normal monsters outside the Drift never drop them.
So the loop is simple. Kill a raid boss, open its zone's Drift, hunt the worst things in it.
Forging a Fractured Drift Rune
Bring your shards to Runecraft in The Sanctuary. Runecraft only works there. Shards plus gold make a Fractured Drift Rune, and the log tells you: "You forged a Fractured Drift Rune."
Some weekly Drift objectives in the Quest Journal pay out runes directly.
Drift Infusions
Spend a Fractured Drift Rune, plus some rune stones and gold, to infuse one stat: Strength, Stamina, Agility, Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma. The game says it straight: "You infused +1 Strength permanently."
Here is what that means:
- It is +1 to that stat, added to your hero's base stats.
- It belongs to that hero. Your other heroes do not get it.
- There is no undo. Pick the stat you want.
- Infusions are capped by level and stored on the character. They do not require gear of any particular rarity.
Infusions provide permanent stat growth alongside levels, gear and other effects.
The other runes
The rest of Runecraft runs on rune stones, which you get by salvaging gear you do not want. Stones power a timed rune for each of the seven stats, and you can upgrade those runes over time. They are buffs that run out. Infusions do not.
If you are new, salvage and regular runes come first. The Drift comes later.
