Disclosure: I am the developer, and I make CalemDrift. It is on this list because it is my game. The others are games I think are worth your time, described as fairly as I can. I checked the details on other games in October 2026. They can change, so check their sites.
When people say "like RuneScape" they usually mean a long grind, numbers that keep going up, a player economy, and a world that pays you back for showing up. These games hit some of that.
CalemDrift (my game)
A dark fantasy RPG with an old grind feel. 30 zones, levels 1 to 50, 199 regular monster types and 29 raid bosses. Players trade through the Auction House. It is about combat, not skilling. Sessions are short and selected skills can fire automatically.
The part RuneScape players tend to like is Runecraft. You salvage gear you do not need into rune stones, and stones power timed stat runes that you can upgrade.
Then there is the Drift, the long tail of the game. Every hunting zone has a corrupted version that unlocks after you kill its raid boss. It has 87 creatures that only spawn there. In The Deep Mines that means the Vein-Sung Horror, the Lanternjaw Crawler and the Blacklung Warden. Drift monsters drop Drift Shards, and shards become Fractured Drift Runes, which give one hero a permanent +1 to a stat. It is a slow climb, and that is on purpose.

- Like RuneScape in: the grind, the economy, the slow climb.
- Not like RuneScape in: no gathering skills, and every fight is solo, raids included.
Old School RuneScape
The obvious pick if you have not played it. Free to start, with an optional membership. You play through the Jagex Launcher on desktop or the Android app. The old Java client was retired in January 2026.
RuneScape (RS3)
The modern RuneScape, with updated combat and graphics. Free to start, with membership. Desktop launcher and mobile.
Kingdom of Loathing
Looks nothing like RuneScape. But if what you love is a weird world, daily routines and long-term collecting, it fits. Free in a browser.
Achaea
A text MUD from Iron Realms with a deep world, player politics and an economy. Free, and it has a web client.
FAQ
Is there a RuneScape you can play in a browser? Not officially anymore. Jagex supports the launcher and the mobile apps.
Does CalemDrift have skills like Woodcutting or Fishing? No. It is combat, loot and the Drift. Runecraft is the closest thing to a crafting skill.
Can I trade with other players in CalemDrift? Yes, through the Auction House. You need a full account, not a guest one.
